Today I worked on more of Lola. I look up the lyrics to help with what part of the song I’m at and the tempo in which it should go. I’m pretty good with it, but some parts have subtle variations that trip me up.
I met her in a club down in old Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca Cola
C-O-L-A, Cola
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca Cola
C-O-L-A, Cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola
L-O-L-A, Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola
L-O-L-A, Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walked like a woman but talked like a man
Oh my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
Why she walked like a woman but talked like a man
Oh my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
Well, we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said "Dear boy, won't you come home with me?"
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said "Dear boy, won't you come home with me?"
Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes, well I almost fell for my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
But when I looked in her eyes, well I almost fell for my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me
Well, that's the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world, except for Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world, except for Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
Well, I left home just a week before
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said "Dear boy, I'm gonna make you a man"
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said "Dear boy, I'm gonna make you a man"
Well, I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
I’m up to the highlighted portion. There are repeated patterns with subtle differences, and a pattern without lyrics that occurs between some verses. I learned the 8th paragraph’s pattern today. The chorus pattern repeats, but as the song goes on, extra aspects are added. Paragraphs 5 and 11 have the same pattern.
Some of the songs don’t follow the lyrics, so maybe those are unreliable. I tried to narrow down my list to ones that seem more trustworthy.
Today I also familiarizing myself with the other songs on my list, trying out the intros, and moving on to another if I got stuck. It’s always easier the second day if I’ve tried it briefly before.
Though I’m not comfortable with it quite yet, I’ve been working on “Michele” by the Beatles for a few days. Some others I’ve been familiarizing myself with are Billy Joel’s “It’s Still Rock an’ Roll to me”, Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode”, and Frankie Vallie’s “I Can’t Take my Eyes off you.”
I’ll try a bit more before I stop for the day.
Sadly I had to scrap a few of my favorites, as they were less well known and didn’t have good tutorials.
Hey Sasha! How is the playing going? Are you playing with chords? or just the melody? And are you singing along? Hope you enjoy the rest of your project, and I hope you'll post a video or two of your work in progress. Wendy
ReplyDeleteI don't know about the technical aspects, I'm following youtube tutorials. I'm hoping to get another video up when I'm better with Lola.
DeleteThinking of the lyrics helps me know where I am, but I'm not much of a singer!
DeleteHi Sasha,
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to me to think of the songs in terms of patterns that repeat! Does that help you with the memorization? Now that you're halfway through your project, what has been the hardest thing for you so far?
Hope you found some time to enjoy the nice weather!
