6/7

Last Friday I met up with my friend Adrian, who has recently come back from studying abroad in Spain. Adrian has been playing piano since he was four years old, and offered me some very enlightening information, as I was having trouble playing the right and left hand at different tempos. Apparently, a better strategy is to learn one hand at a time rather than both, starting from the left, so I'll be doing that from now on!

I thought I'd put my list of songs. I probably won't get to all of them, but it gives me a lot of options.      I've found that some are better than others for my method, ones that have the notes on the bars that slide down help me find a pattern. A lot of it is pattern memorization.      Something that throws me off is when the left hand notes are at a different pace or tempo than the right hand ones. It's difficult to have my hands do different things. Maybe should I be learning each hand separately, then bringing them together? Today I worked more on Lola trying to perfect the second half, and tried "Sunny Afternoon" and "Can't take my eyes off you". It's a bit frustrating when I keep forgetting what happens, and I stall. I guess it takes longer to learn a song than I had thought. Also, I should mention, I believe these aren't the piano backings for songs, rather the song itself piano version. I try to avoid the backings.

Today I worked on more of Lola. I look up the lyrics to help with what part of the song I’m at and the tempo in which it should go. I’m pretty good with it, but some parts have subtle variations that trip me up. I met her in a club down in old Soho Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca Cola C-O-L-A, Cola She walked up to me and she asked me to dance I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola L-O-L-A, Lola La-la-la-la Lola Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine Oh my Lola La-la-la-la Lola Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand Why she walked like a woman but talked like a man Oh my Lola La-la-la-la Lola La-la-la-la Lola Well, we drank champagne and danced all night Under electric candlelight She picked me up and sat me on her knee And said "Dear boy, won't you come home with me?" Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy But when I looked in her ...

Week 1 Check in

Week 1:  Why did you choose this particular project? I chose piano as I already draw as a future career path, so I wanted to pursue a different creative medium. I've never really learnt instruments before. Introductions - what was your inspiration, who are the people you’re working with, etc. I enjoy the era of music of the songs I chose. How did you pull together this particular project? We bought a keyboard last December. It is in my brother's room as he is more musically inclined. 3 goals for your senior project (set these with your mentor) learn a few songs on piano Be able to retain the skill expand my knowledge of how music works beyond just hearing it.
